Before the age of computers and vinyl printers, sign painters worked by hand to illustrate storefronts, billboards and banners. Local craftsmen often developed a signature style that could distinguish a neighborhood, or even a city.

But technology made creating signs less expensive — and less expressive. Sign Painters, a new book and documentary written and directed by Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, focuses on dozens of artists who are keeping the art alive.

Before Macon began working on the film, he said never thought much about sign painting.

“I had never really given any thought to the fact that this is someone’s job, and the fact that individuals across America were painting signs regionally that defined the way the United States looked,” Macon told NPR’s Neal Conan.

Once word got out about the project in the sign-painting community, they were flooded with personal stories. “We were totally inundated in the best way, and we ended up having more content than we could track down,” Macon said.

Touche of the Day: Game Dev Tycoon School Pirates with a Clever In-Game Event
Greenheart Games has come up with a clever, refreshing way to discourage its patrons from pirating video games. Minutes after releasing their latest title Game Dev Tycoon last Sunday, the developers intentionally leaked a free “cracked” version of the game on a torrent site, and with the help of a few seeding friends, more than 3,104 users, or nearly 94% of all players, had downloaded the illegal copy within the first day. What none of them had realized is that the “cracked” version was designed for failure: after a few hours of gameplay, the player’s virtual game development company’s titles would become victims of piracy themselves, causing them to slowly go bankrupt.

A Spark is All It Takes by Charlotte Estelle Littlehales

The math: 2,600 matchsticks, 720 minutes to create, and 1 minute of fiery immolation to undo it all; Charlotte’s typographic matchstick design is a testament to the creative and sometimes destructive power of imagination.

What Was on the First SAT?
Taking the SAT is a rite of passage and has been ever since the first exam was offered in 1926 as a way to eliminate the prep school bias of the college admissions process.
The very first SAT looks quite different from today’s three-hour-45-minute version. Students who took the original SAT on June 23, 1926, tackled nine sub-tests totaling 315 questions in just 97 minutes. - Continue to Smithsonian.com to see an interactive version of the first SAT.
